Do you have a dream no one understands?
Do people wonder why “no one has ever done that before” doesn’t faze you?
Do you have uncommon energy and discipline?
If the answer is “YES,” congratulations! You are in good company.
Successful people often have certain traits in common and here are five of them:
1. They TUNE OUT the DOUBT
Most of us know the feeling of enlightenment and excitement- the hope that great ideas bring. We also know what it’s like to tell someone our idea, and all of a sudden feel hollow. Empty.
While not all of our “brilliant” ideas are worth pursuing, if every part of your being says this is what I am supposed to do, then regardless of how many reasons there are to “let it go,” don’t you dare!
Successful people are aware but don’t care about “the odds.” They want you to cheer them on, but will move forward whether you do or don’t.
2. They PERSEVERE
The gymnast nails a triple back tuck, the baseball player makes yet another home run, the snow skier flies down the slope at record speed. We watch them in awe, having no comprehension of how many times they’ve fallen, missed the mark, made costly mistakes, and gone to bed wondering, what am I doing.
Once upon a time, two brothers looked into the sky and imagined inventing a flying machine. Their father, who was a Bishop, told them it was a crazy idea. A man named Thomas Edison was told by his teachers that he was stupid. Walt Disney was fired because he lacked creativity and had no imagination. Michael Jordon was cut from his high school basketball team.
Successful people are tenacious. They don’t sink in their setbacks. They keep on keeping on.
3. They STAY HUNGRY
No matter how successful they become, they thirst for knowledge. They never stop reading, exploring, or asking “why.” They surround themselves with people who know more than they do, initiate conversations with people whose gifts and talents are different from their own, and they listen more than they talk.
Successful people strive for excellence and know the best is yet to come.
4. They DON’T MAKE EXCUSES
If there isn’t a way, they make a way. Successful people think outside the box. They are solution-driven, innovative, and self-motivated. They have a plan and adapt it to fit the situation. They are always ready.
Successful people don’t let where they came from affect where they are going. Mother Teresa started her ministry on the streets with no home and no money. Martin Luther King Jr. lived in a society that persecuted him and paid him no respect. Joan of Arc was a peasant.
Successful people don’t make excuses, they change the world.
5. They PURSUE PURPOSE
Regardless of how brilliant, beautiful, determined, motivated and committed you are, there will be many, so many times you will want to give up. Having a Purpose greater than yourself is what enables you to “tune out the doubt” and persevere through every season of life. Purpose keeps you hungry and won’t settle for excuses.
Wherever you are today, no matter how unsuccessful you may feel, Purpose is a trait you possess. It is inside you – it’s the reason you were created.
Now that you know you have something in common with every successful person on this earth, go back to number one and start working on the others.
You are needed. You are valuable. Purpose is waiting on you.
