As time goes by and people continue to get older, it can be harder to find and maintain quality friendships as adults. Childhood friendships are much easier. Unfortunately, with the hustle and bustle of parenthood, careers, and life's adventures, friendship can easily fall by the wayside. However, bonding time is incredibly important, and you should make a concerted effort to keep adult friendships alive for a few reasons.

1. Community

There's an African proverb that states, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Whether you have a child or not, you need a village of people around you. When you know that you have a support system, you'll feel a sense of belonging and a strong sense of community. When you know someone you trust is around the corner and can help you through a crisis; it makes life easier to face.

2. Love

No matter who you are, you have an innate desire to be loved. While your friends may not be able to love you in the same way your spouse or children can, they can still provide an agape (friendly) love that means a lot. When you've had a bad day at work and just need someone to cry with you or listen to you cry, an adult friendship comes in handy. If you're feeling lonely and unloved, you can call up one of your friends to keep you company until the feeling passes. Knowing that you're loved by your friends is priceless.

3. Life Experiences

In life, everyone experiences birthdays, weddings and funerals. In these different events, the people that typically populate the room are considered friends or family. Even with good family members, there's a level of friendship. Life-giving adult friendships are beneficial through the good times and the hard times. It's helpful to know that someone wishes you well as you embark upon a new journey like home ownership, marriage, or parenthood.

4. Fun

Friendships add fun to your life! If you're throwing a party at home, you're going to want your friends there. You most certainly do not want strangers populating the room. Imagine going out on your new deck and creating a sunset dinner to celebrate an important milestone. Chances are you'll want your friends surrounding that dinner table on the deck. For you to have people surrounding the table, you've got to become intentional about making and keeping adult friendships.

Maintaining friendships as an adult can definitely take work. It can be hard and inconvenient. However, at the end of your life, what will be most important is how much you loved people and how much people loved you. Spread love to the people you care about.
