5 Tips for Managing Conflict

Here are 5 tips for managing conflict – in a simple step by step process.

If you're dealing with difficult people and face some type of disagreement, negativity, or full blown argument, you have the power to transform that situation.

You do this through:

  • The way you feel (therefore the energy you bring)
  • How you behave
  • What you say

You might notice that these are ALL things you have control over. You can manage your feelings and set yourself up with calm energy. You can also choose how you behave and what you say.

You must take ownership of these 3 things in order to effectively navigate any conflict!

Grab a pen and paper to take notes on and let's get started…

5 Tips for Managing Conflict

Summary

  1. Give up the need to be right.
  2. Allow the other person or people to have their viewpoint.
  3. When talking, do so from a space of calm. If you can't communicate calmly, wait until you can.
  4. Only speak for resolution – looking for solutions. Think, “What outcome do I want and need, what is the middle ground and how can I move US (myself and the others) towards that place?”
  5. Only speak looking forward – how can we move positively in a direction that serves all parties, and resist the urge to drag up the past.

  1. Dear Bernadette,
Thanks for your very helpful advice, I really needed it! It seems to come at a timely moment in my life. I am having lots of conflicts with both my husband and my mother – two very strong minded people! And at first I do sincerely try to stay calm, inside – but after keeping it in for so long(my aversion to what was being said)….I eventually get agitated & blow up, later on.
But after careful consideration of your points above…..it seems I am not focused enough on coming back later, and being fixating on a solution. Also I am still peeved about some inane comment they made. Okay so maybe, I am also a part of the problem, since I am sure not coming up with a viable solution….just on pointing out how I am right & they are wrong….aghhhh. Maybe someday, I’ll get this right.
Many thanks for your insight! I am very happy I found your website & I love your perspective on life.

    Best regards,
    Natacha

    1. Glad this was helpful. And we’re all a work in progress, it’s just wonderful you’re opening to learning and growing in order to improve the situation. That’s what counts 🙂 B

    1. Hey Ayoub, the video is playing fine, on all devices and browsers. It’s a standard vimeo video, I’m not sure why you are having issues. There is no privacy restriction on the video. 🙂 Sorry about that. I’d love to be able to help you troubleshoot the issue, but can’t see any reason why it would be happening. B
